Spread the love

One of the best things we can do for our skin is to exfoliate. When we do this, it removes the dead skin cells that can leave our skin dull and it reveals the glowing skin underneath. However; finding the best exfoliating face scrub can be a daunting task. That is why we have done the research for you, and have provided 3 excellent choices that are sure to leave your skin looking flawless!

The Importance Of Exfoliating

Why is it important to exfoliate our skin? Exfoliation is removing the top layer of dead skin cells to reveal brighter looking skin. As we get older, the process of cell regeneration slows down, leaving our skin dull and lifeless. When these dead skin cells are not removed, you get a build-up of dead skin which can result in clogged pores, leading to blemishes and other skin imperfections.

Benefits of exfoliating:

  • Smoother skin
  • Brighter skin
  • Improves the texture
  • Removes dead skin cells that can clog skin
  • Lightens age spots
  • Provides a youthful glow
  • Speeds up the skin renewal process
  • Moisturizers work better

How Often Should We Exfoliate?

One of the biggest things to keep in mind when exfoliating, is your skin type. If you have sensitive skin, you will not want to exfoliate as often.

Dermatologist Ranella Hirsch, a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Boston University School of Medicine, Women Exfoliating Facestates that can “over exfoliating is probably the single most cause or breakouts. Therefore, it is important not to exfoliate too often. This is not good for your skin and can even leave it irritated and dried out. Never exfoliate your face more that can 3 times a week and once a week for sensitive skin. If you exfoliate too often, it can actually slow cell turnover

Mechanical And Chemical Exfoliation

There are two ways to exfoliate the skin, mechanical and chemical. Your skin type will dictate which method is best for you. Mechanical exfoliation basically means using a brush, scrub, tool or sponge, to remove dead skin cells. Chemical exfoliation uses chemicals to dissolve the dead skin cells.

When you exfoliate your skin, apply a small amount of the product and gently rub in a circular motion. You should use lukewarm warm water and avoid overly hot water as this is very drying to the skin. Never exfoliate your skin if you have an open wound or cut.
You want to make sure you moisturize after exfoliating the skin, if not, you risk drying out your skin. Exfoliating leaves your skin able to absorb the moisturizer in a more efficient manner.

Some medications and over the counter products may cause your skin to be more sensitive. Retinol and benzoyl peroxide are products that can are drying to the skin. Exfoliating while using this products may worsen dry skin. You may want to check with your doctor if you are using any medications that can leave your skin sensitive.
