Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels are a great way to remove dark spots from the skin. This procedure is performed at your dermatologist’s office. There are 3 types of Chemical Peels. There is a Light Peel, Medium Depth Peel and a Deep Chemical Peel. You would discuss with your dermatologist the peel that would work best for your skin concern. Basically a chemical solution is applied to the skin. Your skin will peel in 3 to 7 days to reveal younger skin. Keep in mind, if you have an important function and you don’t want to be seen with your skin peeling, make sure you schedule the procedure when you don’t have any important upcoming events. The peel also strengthens the skin and boosts collagen production. You may be a little uncomfortable as your skin will have a burning sensation when the chemicals are applied. Usually several treatments are given. The length between peels is determined by the type of peel you’ve had. With a Light Peel, the sessions could be repeated every 1-4 weeks, Medium Peel every 6-12 weeks and a Deep Chemical Peel is only performed once. To avoid the reappearance of dark spots, use a strong sunscreen daily. There are a few risks associated with this option that you would discuss with your dermatologist’s. The price can range anywhere from $100.00 to $350.00 a session.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is another great way to remove dark spots or age spots from the skin. This procedure is also done at the dermatologist’s office. It is basically a surgical sanding of the skin with tiny mineral crystals. It not only reduces the look of age spots, but it removes fine lines and wrinkles. You would feel a small amount of discomfort. The session is usually 30-60 minutes. With Microdermabrasion, you will need several sessions to see the best results. Again, you want to discuss any risks associated with this procedure with your dermatologist. You can expect to pay between $100.00 to $300.00 per session. You will need to use sunscreen to prevent the age spots from reappearing.

Laser Resurfacing Conclusion

Laser Resurfacing is another option for getting rid of those embarrassing dark spots on the skin. Laser resurfacing uses a powerful beam of green light. The brown pigment absorbs the light and breaks up the pigment. Some people have satisfactory results with only one treatment. Some people will need more than one treatment. The treatments are usually down every 2 months. You want to discuss any risks associated with this procedure with your dermatologist. The pricing is similar to the Chemical Peels and Microdermabrasion. Again, wearing a sunscreen is a must.  CLICK HERE TO SEE OUR TOP SUNSCREEN!

  1. I came across your post on removing dark spots while looking for a way to remove dark circles around the eyes and got curious.

I know I definitely don’t want to go through any laser treatment but do you think any of the creams will also work for the dark circles around the eyes?

    • Hi Salvatore, Thanks for the inquiry. Our #2 pick Meladerm makes another great product specifically for under eye circles. It is called Eye Complex by Meladerm Skincare. If you click on the Meladerm link, it shows some related products by Meladerm.

  2. Found a dark spot on my cheek today and wonder what I could do with it. Other than using a removal cream, seems like I’ll have to make a few trips to the dermatologists in the near future for more advanced treatment.

Sounds pricey. Have you done any dark spot removal at the doctors? Did it turn out well? It would be great to hear your experience.

    • Hi Cathy, I think I would try a removal cream first to see if it lightens it before moving to the next step. The procedures performed at the dermatologist can get pricey. Especially since several treatments are usually required.

I didn’t have any of those procedures for age spot removal, but I’ve had a chemical peel before for fine lines. It really rejuvenates the skin! It does burn a little when they apply the chemicals, but after a minute or so, it is fine. The recovery time is fast. Your skin flakes for the week after, so if you have any special events planned, might want to schedule it at a later time.

  3. Hi! Thank you for this very informative article on removing dark spots from the skin.

Out of all of the choices you presented, I would definitely start with the spot removal creams. Frankly, the others seem rather painful and terrifying not mention expensive.

My grandmother used to cut a lemon in half and rub it on her skin to remove age spots. It really seemed to work. Have you every tried this?

    • Hi Barb,

I agree, I think the spot removal creams are the first route to take. They are the least expensive and definitely less painful!  As for the lemons, our grandmothers certainly had it right with the lemons. It is a great home remedy to lighten those annoying age spots.
