How Does Retinol Help My Skin?

When it comes to an ingredient to look for in a skin care product, look no further that retinol. It provides a host of benefits. It boosts collagen production, tightens skin, reduces fine lines and stimulates the skin’s natural shedding process for faster cell turnover which evens out discolorations and skin tone. With all those wonderful benefits, it makes using a good retinol cream a must in your skin care routine. Now that we know how beneficial retinol is to our skin and our skin’s overall health, it is definitely worth incorporating into our daily beauty routine. How do we go about finding the best retinol cream?

Retinol creams can have dramatically different effects on your skin. The different concentration levels of retinol contained in the product and the other ingredients that may be included in the formula determines its effectiveness.
Some things you want to avoid in a retinol cream are products that have parabens or other artificial preservatives. These additives have no benefit to the skin and should be avoided.

Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas, Ph.D., a New York City–based dermatologist, states no other ingredient can rival the track records of retinoids when it comes to scientifically proven results.

Retinoids Obtained Through A Prescription.

Most people use an over the counter retinol cream. However, your dermatologist can provide a prescription strength  retinoid called Retin-A or the generic version which is Tretinoin. As with any prescription, you want to follow all the directions provided by the manufacturer and read about any possible side effects.

Usually over the counter products work effectively, however; it will generally take a longer time period to achieve the desired results. For those that have sensitive skin, using an over the counter retinol cream may be the best option.

Possible Side Effects

Although retinol products have many benefits to the skin, it can also cause certain side effects. It may take your skin awhile to adjust to the retinol product.

Some people may experience redness and irritation in the first couple of weeks. Retinol is also very drying to the skin, so make sure the product you chose has a moisturizing ingredient listed as well or that you use a separate moisturizer.

Dermatologists recommend using the retinol cream every other night to reduce irritation until your skin can tolerate daily usage.

Directions For Usage

If you have never used retinol products before, it is best to limit use to twice a week. After the first week, you can gradually increase frequency to every other night. Once you have no reaction, you can finally use once daily in the evening.  Apply a pea-sized amount of Retinol 1.0 to clean skin the evening. Always be careful to avoid the eye area. For the best results, wait at least 30 minutes before applying other products after you have applied SkinCeuticals retinol.

Always remember to use sunscreen as retinol products can make your skin sun sensitive. Make sure your retinol cream contains a good moisturizer because retinol can dry out the skin.

We think you’ll love this product too and add it to your list of the best retinol creams!

  1. Great article, Lisa.
I have heard great things about retinol cream but I have never had the need to try it. Now that I am more mature, I just might consider it. This product that you have reviewed sounds great. The part that ‘sells’ for me is where you say that it is backed by scientific research. I love that stamp of approval, along with the other points you mentioned. Do you know anyone who has tried it and how it was for them? I have very sensitive skin and I really need to be ‘mindful’.
    Thanks again.

    • Hi Michelle, Actually retinol creams can be used in your 20’s to prevent wrinkles. It has that ability, so it benefits the younger people as well who want to preserve their skin. I know several people who use the SkinCeuticals line of products and have fabulous looking skin. With any retinol product, if you have sensitive skin, you want to use it only twice a week to start and progress form there once your skin is adjusted. Lisa

  2. Hi Lisa,
I know that Retinol, or Vitamin A1, is very important for eye healthy and eye sight, but don’t aware that it is also important to skin healthy. I feel that my sight become weak since I sit in front of computer every day and I take one Vitamin A tablet a day, as precaution. Thanks to your article, I will try to use Retinol Cream to prevent the wrinkles on my skin. Thanks for sharing.

  3. This information on the Retinol cream is extremely helpful, especially at my age. I could really use a product like this now. I have taken great care of my skin in my younger years, but now noticing some deeper lines and wrinkles appearing. Excellent and helpful information here, Lisa. Thank you.

    • Sue, I’m happy you found the post helpful. Most dermatologists agree, using a retinol product is a must have in our beauty routine. I tend to lean towards over the counter products because prescription strength Retinol can be very drying to the skin if you don’t use the correct moisturizer. Lisa
