An over production of melanin means dark spots, melasma and other skin discolorations. Basically kojic acid is able to prevent skin pigmentation, which helps lighten and even out your skin tone.

Some people do not like to use hydroquinone because it has been linked to cancer in rats, in very high doses. Although most dermatologists deem it safe for usage for a limited time period. If using hydroquinone is a concern, using a product with kojic acid is an alternative.

Azelaic acid is often prescribed as an acne treatment. However, it is effective in the treatment of age spots and hyperpigmentation. Azelaic acid belongs to a class of drugs known as dicarboxylic acids.

Azelaic acid exists naturally in many whole grains, barley, wheat, and oats. It also inhibits the enzyme, tyrosinase similar to hydroquinone and kojic acid. All beneficial in reducing skin discolorations.

Alpha hydroxy acid, beta hydroxy acid and saticylic acid all work by sloughing off the top layer of the skin cells, leaving clearer skin. Think about it this way. Hydroquinone, kojic acid and azelaic acid all inhibit melanin production, so dark spots don’t appear. They you have the hydroxy acids, sloughing off the old skin.
